How it's used

Much of an oral dose is broken down by the liver before reaching the brain, so absorption varies between people. Sublingual lozenges are meant to absorb partly through the mouth. Prescribers typically start low and adjust.

What the evidence shows

Research on oral ketamine for depression is limited to smaller studies. It is not considered equivalent to IV ketamine or FDA-approved esketamine.

At-home programs

Some services mail ketamine after an online evaluation. Supervision is lighter than in a clinic. If you consider this route, insist on a thorough evaluation, a clear safety plan, a sober monitor during doses, and secure storage away from others.

Safety

Ketamine can cause dissociation, sedation, raised blood pressure, nausea, and dizziness, and it can be misused. A licensed prescriber must evaluate your full medical and psychiatric history first, and you should never drive until the next day.

Is oral ketamine the same as SPRAVATO®?

No. SPRAVATO® is esketamine nasal spray, FDA-approved for specific depression uses and only used in certified clinics. Oral ketamine is a different, off-label preparation.
